I am using a jailbroken and factory unlocked iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1 and want to update to the latest firmware version. If I perform a backup, update the software, and then restore my backup, will my application data and settings remain intact? I need to ensure that my personal data is preserved throughout the update and jailbreak process.

When updating a jailbroken iPhone 4, it is important to understand that a standard iTunes or iCloud backup only includes your App Store apps, settings, photos, and personal data. It will not back up your jailbreak tweaks, Cydia apps, or their settings. To proceed, first perform a full backup of your device to your computer using iTunes. Next, use the Restore option in iTunes to update your iPhone to the latest official firmware, which for the iPhone 4 is iOS 7.1.2. After the restore is finished, select the option to restore from your previous backup to return your data to the device. If you want to maintain a jailbroken state, you will then need to run a jailbreak tool compatible with iOS 7.1.2 and manually reinstall your Cydia packages. Your standard application data should remain preserved through this process.
