How can I get the iPhone 5 if I am not yet eligible for an upgrade?

I purchased an iPhone 4S in December with a new 2-year contract from AT&T. With the iPhone 5 release approaching, I want to know if I can purchase it early. Will AT&T charge extra? If so, how much? Thank you!

Carrier policies regarding early upgrades often fluctuate when a new Apple product is released. Initially, carriers like AT&T and Verizon may require you to pay early upgrade pricing or the full retail price if you haven't reached your contract's end date. It is often beneficial to compare the cost of the 'early upgrade' price versus the early termination fee (ETF) of your current contract to see which is more cost-effective.

You may qualify for 'early upgrade' pricing, which is typically higher than the standard subsidized price but lower than full retail. On AT&T, you can dial *639# to receive a text message stating your eligibility and pricing options. If you have a family plan, you can also use an upgrade from another line on your account. Alternatively, many users sell their current iPhone 4S (especially if unlocked) to cover the cost of the iPhone 5 at full retail price.
