How to update to iOS 6.0.1 using an IPSW file in iTunes

I have downloaded the iOS 6.0.1 IPSW file for my device and would like to know the correct procedure for installing it via iTunes. Should I use the Shift plus Update or Shift plus Restore method to complete the update?

Before performing any software update, you should first create a full backup of your device. To install a manual IPSW file, hold the Option key on a Mac or the Shift key on Windows and click the Update button in iTunes if you want to preserve your data. If you prefer a clean installation that erases all content, which is often recommended for troubleshooting or before applying a jailbreak, hold the same key and click Restore instead.
