I am currently on iOS 5.0.1 with an iPhone 4 using baseband 4.10.01 and a Gevey SIM. I want to upgrade to iOS 6.1 and jailbreak but I need to preserve my baseband to keep my cellular service. Does the evasi0n jailbreak tool upgrade the baseband and how can I safely update without losing my unlock?

To update to iOS 6.1 without upgrading your baseband, you must use a custom IPSW. Jailbreaking with evasi0n does not affect your baseband, but a standard restore or update in iTunes will. You can use Sn0wbreeze on Windows or Redsn0w to create a custom firmware file that excludes the baseband update. Once the custom IPSW is created, put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode and use iTunes to restore to that specific file. After the firmware is installed, you can proceed with the evasi0n jailbreak tool to unlock the full features of the OS while maintaining your Gevey SIM compatibility.

Jailbreaking your device does not upgrade your baseband, but performing a standard iOS update through iTunes will. To prevent a baseband upgrade, you must create a custom IPSW file using a tool like Sn0wbreeze or Redsn0w. Sn0wbreeze allows you to 'cook' a firmware file that preserves your current baseband. Once you have restored to that custom firmware in iTunes, you can then use the evasi0n tool to jailbreak iOS 6.1.
