I flashed my new bootrom iPhone 3GS to the iPad baseband (6.15.00) and it is currently unlocked with ultrasn0w. I am wondering if it is safe to upgrade to iOS 6 and if I will be able to restore my backup after jailbreaking the new OS.

To upgrade your iPhone 3GS with the 6.15.00 iPad baseband to iOS 6, follow these steps. First, use redsn0w to downgrade your baseband from 6.15.00 to a standard version like 05.13.04 to restore GPS functionality. Next, use redsn0w to update to iOS 6 while preserving your baseband to ensure you don't lose the ability to unlock. Since this is a new bootrom 3GS, the jailbreak will initially be tethered. Once you have booted tethered, search for and install the p0sixspwn or evasi0n package from Cydia to make the jailbreak untethered. Finally, install ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock your device. You can restore your backup through iTunes once the jailbreak is complete.
