I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1 with baseband 5.13.04. I would like to update to a newer iOS version using RedSn0w without updating my baseband, as I need to keep the device unlocked. What are the steps to safely update and re-jailbreak?

To update an iPhone 3GS while preserving an unlockable baseband like 5.13.04, you must use RedSn0w to restore using a custom IPSW. 1. Download the iOS 6.1.6 IPSW for your device. 2. In RedSn0w, go to Extras, then Even More, then Restore. Select the IPSW and choose Yes when asked to preserve the baseband. 3. Follow the prompts to enter Pwned DFU mode. 4. After the restore is complete, jailbreak the device using RedSn0w. If you have a newer bootrom 3GS, you can install the p0sixspwn package from Cydia to ensure the jailbreak is untethered. 5. Finally, install UltraSn0w from Cydia to restore your cellular unlock.

You can update your firmware to iOS 6.1.6 using RedSn0w. RedSn0w supports a jailbreak for this version, which is untethered for older bootrom iPhone 3GS models. For newer bootrom models, you can apply the p0sixspwn fix from Cydia to achieve an untethered jailbreak. Always ensure you select the option to preserve your baseband if you require a software unlock via UltraSn0w.
