I am currently running iOS 3.1.3 on an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 3GS. Is it possible to upgrade to iOS 4 or iOS 5, and what is the process for doing so?

Upgrading an iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 or iOS 5 is only possible if you have previously saved SHSH blobs for those specific firmware versions. Since Apple is no longer signing these older versions of iOS, a standard restore through iTunes will not work. If you have your blobs, you can use utilities such as redsn0w or iFaith to create a signed custom firmware for restoration. If you do not have saved blobs, the only available upgrade path is to iOS 6.1.6, which is the final software release for the iPhone 3GS. Please be aware that performing a standard update will also update your baseband. If you rely on a software unlock like ultrasn0w, you should use a custom firmware to preserve your current baseband version.
