Downgrading from iOS 6 to iOS 5 using RedSn0w is possible, but it requires that you have previously saved SHSH blobs for the firmware version you wish to install. This method is primarily effective for older A4 devices such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the 4th generation iPod touch. For newer devices, the window for downgrading is typically closed once Apple stops signing the firmware. Just keep in mind, you can only downgrade a phone that you've ALREADY saved the SHSH Blobs from (meaning you had to have it loaded and actively tried to save it). If you're trying to restore to a version that you never installed before, it won't work.
