How to update from iOS 6.0.2 to 6.1.2 without installing iOS 6.1.3

I have the IPSW file for the CDMA iPhone 5 on Verizon. I tried to manually install iOS 6.1.2 using iTunes on my Mac, but it says it is not compatible. Has Apple blocked this, or is there another way to install an IPSW file without using iTunes?

The reason you are seeing a compatibility error is that Apple has stopped signing iOS 6.1.2. When you try to restore or update your iPhone using iTunes, the software contacts Apple servers to verify the firmware. If Apple is no longer signing that specific version, the installation will be blocked. Since the iPhone 5 does not have a bootrom exploit like the iPhone 4, you cannot bypass this check unless you have previously saved SHSH blobs for your specific device for iOS 6.1.2. Without those blobs, iTunes will only allow you to update to the latest signed version, which in this case is iOS 6.1.3 or later.
