I am looking for a way to unlock an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 with baseband 04.12.01 or a method to downgrade the firmware to make it unlockable.

To unlock an iPhone 4 with baseband 04.12.01, you must use an official IMEI factory unlock. There are no software-based unlocks available for this specific modem firmware, and it is impossible to downgrade the baseband on an iPhone 4. You should contact the carrier the phone was originally locked to and request an unlock, which is often provided for free if the contract has been fulfilled. Alternatively, you can use a third-party IMEI unlock service. This method is permanent and remains effective even if you update or restore your device.

Your best option for this device is a factory unlock. Downgrading the baseband firmware is not possible on the iPhone 4. Factory unlocks are the most reliable method and are widely available for legacy devices.
