How Can I Update an iPhone 3G to the Latest iOS Version?

I have an iPhone 3G currently running iOS 2.0. When I try to update via iTunes, I receive error -1. What is the latest iOS version supported by the iPhone 3G, and how can I update it? Is it possible to upgrade to iOS 6?

The iPhone 3G can only be updated to a maximum of iOS 4.2.1. It is not compatible with iOS 5, iOS 6, or any later versions due to hardware limitations. To update the device, connect it to your computer and use iTunes. If you are seeing error -1, this usually suggests a hardware communication issue or a failure during the baseband update process. You may have better success by putting the iPhone into DFU mode and then selecting the Restore option in iTunes. Keep in mind that most modern applications require a much newer version of iOS and will not run on this device.
