How can I update Iphone 3G to newer iOS?

Hi, i got a new iPhone 3g for my father (old man doesn´t need smarter version :) ), but it´s on iOS version 2 and when i try to update by iTunes it always ends up with error -1... How can I update the iOS for new version? Is there any possibility to upgrade it to iOS 6? Thanks so much for any advice

Well, we went to the apple store and they upgraded it to iOS 4.2. but since that upgrade the wifi doesn´t work, the wifi - hardware is working well, but there is some software issue. Any advice how to fix it? in the apple store they said that it is impossible to make any downgrade. Any way how to jailbrake it and upgrade to any higher iOS version?
