I have an iPhone 4 currently running iOS 5.1 and would like to know if the signing window for iOS 5.1.1 is still open for an update.

Apple has officially closed the signing window for iOS 5.1.1. In most cases, Apple only allows you to restore to the latest firmware version compatible with your device. For the iPhone 4, the final supported firmware version is iOS 7.1.2. If you are trying to update specifically to iOS 5.1.1, you can only do so if you have previously saved SHSH blobs for that specific firmware on your device. Without those blobs, you will be forced to update to the latest available version. You can check the current signing status of any Apple firmware using the iClarified IPSW wizard. www.iclarified.com/ipsw
