Apple Testing 200MP Camera Sensor for Future iPhone [Rumor]

Apple is evaluating a 200-megapixel camera sensor for a future iPhone, potentially setting up its biggest resolution upgrade yet.



The latest supply chain details come from frequent leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo. According to the post, Apple is testing a 200MP sensor with a 1/1.12-inch footprint. The setup is said to match the same solution used in the Oppo Find X9 Ultra. The leaker adds that the technology is expected to reach commercialization next year.


That timeline aligns with earlier reports. Back in January, the same account said Apple evaluated 200MP components but ultimately kept a 48-megapixel main camera for the iPhone 18. Instead, the focus for the 2026 lineup appears to be on mechanical improvements. Apple is reportedly testing a variable aperture system to give the camera more direct control over light and depth of field.

A 1/1.12-inch sensor would offer a much larger surface area to capture light and detail. Apple has historically avoided chasing megapixel counts, instead relying on sensor quality and computational processing. A move to 200MP would mark its biggest jump in resolution since the iPhone 14 Pro shifted from 12MP to 48MP.
