Book Excerpt Reveals Why Apple Stores Struggled to Sell Vision Pro

Apple invited hundreds of retail employees to its Cupertino campus in early 2024 for a training session that felt more like a spy operation than a product briefing. Workers were forced to sign NDAs and lock their phones in GPS-blocking Faraday bags just to learn how to sell the Vision Pro. While the technology was described by some as "insanely brilliant," a new excerpt published by Wired suggests the rollout exposed deeper changes inside Apple's retail operations, where a push for efficiency has reshaped how stores function.

The logistics of the Vision Pro demo proved to be a significant hurdle for staff to master. To get a single customer into a headset, employees had to scan their face, select from roughly 25 different light seal sizes, and navigate a script that ran over a dozen screens. Many workers received limited hands-on preparation, in some cases getting as little as 20 to 60 minutes to practice before being expected to run full sessions for the public. Some employees later relied on reading the script directly from an iPad, delivering it in a halting or robotic manner. These challenges came as the headset was already struggling to gain traction. We previously noted that Apple cut Vision Pro production and marketing after shipments fell sharply. Even after the company released an updated Vision Pro with the M5 chip, the high price and specialized nature of the device kept it from becoming a mass-market success.

An excerpt from Noam Scheiber's upcoming book Mutiny describes how the retail environment has shifted since the era of Steve Jobs. While Jobs once viewed the Apple Store as a place to evangelize and teach, recent years have brought a stronger emphasis on efficiency and measurable performance under Tim Cook. Under previous leadership, "Creatives" acted as personal coaches who built a loyal customer base through one-on-one tutorials. More recently, managers began pushing specific metrics like phone activations and AppleCare+ sign-ups. At the flagship Chicago store, one salesperson described being "thrown from the nest" after only 30 minutes of practice with the complex Vision Pro script.

This pressure contributed to the decision by employees in Towson, Maryland, to form Apple's first U.S. union. Creatives who were originally hired to teach found themselves pulled away from tutorials to help with demos in a chaotic atmosphere. Demos frequently took up to an hour, yet some employees reported going weeks without closing a single sale. The physical weight of the device and the uncanny appearance of Digital Personas only made the $3,500 pitch more difficult for a workforce that has become more transient to sell.

The struggle to sell the Vision Pro stands in contrast to the momentum seen with other recent launches. Just last month, we saw Apple Stores prepare for massive traffic ahead of the MacBook Neo, a product that follows a more traditional, high-volume retail path. Historically, retail staff helped save the Apple Watch in 2015 by identifying its potential as a fitness tracker and sharing those best practices with Cupertino. However, the excerpt suggests that while Apple Stores once played a key role in saving struggling products, the Vision Pro rollout instead highlighted how difficult it has become for Apple's current retail structure to execute a launch this complex.
