John Ternus to Bring Jobs Style Decisiveness as Apple CEO [Report]

John Ternus is expected to bring a sharper and more decisive leadership style to Apple when he officially takes the helm this September. Following the announcement that Tim Cook will step down as CEO, the report points to a shift away from the consensus-driven management that defined the past fifteen years.

John Ternus to Bring Jobs Style Decisiveness as Apple CEO [Report]

A new profile from Bloomberg outlines how the 50-year-old hardware chief operates behind closed doors. While Apple presented a message of continuity during the transition announcement, Ternus is known among colleagues as a leader willing to make clear, definitive calls. One person who worked closely with both executives noted that bringing a choice between two options to Cook often resulted in a long series of questions. Ternus, on the other hand, will simply pick a direction and move forward. This centralized approach is viewed internally as a shift, putting his management style closer to that of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and built his reputation on execution. He ensured the company consistently delivered annual updates to its core product lines while improving overall build quality. He has also shown a willingness to break from Apple's traditional premium-only playbook. He was a primary champion of the recently launched $599 MacBook Neo, urging the company to release a more affordable machine to capture a younger demographic. Conversely, his instincts skewed cautious on some of Apple's most expensive bets. He reportedly opposed the canceled autonomous car project and the Vision Pro headset to varying degrees, preferring to steer clear of massive investments that lacked a clear market fit.

That decisiveness is now being pointed at Apple's product roadmap. The company is attempting to push into the smart home market with a robotic tabletop display, a privacy-focused security camera, and a smart display. However, software delays tied to the next-generation Siri voice assistant have pushed those releases back. The tabletop robot, once targeted for 2027, is now at risk of slipping into 2028. Wearable projects like smart glasses and AirPods with computer-vision cameras are facing similar development hurdles. These delays are beginning to impact Apple's ability to ship the hardware that drives its upgrade cycles.

The handover process is already well underway. Apple laid out the transition timeline in internal memos sent to staff this week. Ahead of the move, Ternus overhauled the hardware engineering division to focus heavily on a new AI platform designed to speed up product development. That restructuring coincided with Johny Srouji being named Chief Hardware Officer, an elevation that consolidates hardware engineering and custom silicon under one executive. Ternus plans to stay deeply involved in product development from the CEO office, relying on deputies like Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan to handle the daily business operations.

He will officially start his tenure right as Apple launches its first foldable iPhone and rolls out a major Siri reboot this fall. Cook, meanwhile, is stepping back from the daily grind but isn't leaving Cupertino. As he explained in an open letter to customers, he will transition to executive chairman. In that role, Cook will focus on government relations and manage Apple's complex geopolitical challenges, including its supply chain footprint in China and navigating relations with policymakers in Washington. Colleagues noted that Ternus is not yet ready to take over the geopolitical mantle, making Cook's continued presence vital for the foreseeable future.
