Apple is spotlighting the creative potential of its latest flagship hardware through a new collaboration with the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image. Through the MAMI Select program, four emerging filmmakers produced original short films using the iPhone 17 Pro Max, leaning on the device's advanced camera systems and editing workflows powered by the M5 MacBook Pro and M5 iPad Pro.

Mentored by industry veterans like Sriram Raghavan and Chaitanya Tamhane, the participating directors used Apple's mobile hardware to navigate demanding shooting environments. For director Shreela Agarwal, whose film explores Mumbai after dark, capturing ProRes RAW video allowed her team to recover critical detail in post-production. Pushing the ISO and adjusting white balance helped balance the varying colors of streetlights and maintain a crisp image in low light, all without needing a large traditional lighting setup.

For director Ritesh Sharma, sound design took priority. He used the Audio Mix feature to better isolate voices against the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea during location shoots in Goa. Sharma also relied on Cinematic mode to shift focus between reality and dreamlike sequences in his film. Robin Joy leaned on Action mode to steady shots filmed from a small boat, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max's vapor chamber cooling system helped the device maintain performance through long outdoor shoots.

Post-production also relied heavily on Apple's latest silicon. Joy edited 4K timelines directly on an M5 MacBook Pro, with AI-powered mask tracking in Adobe Premiere Pro handling complex object masking directly on-device. On set, Sharma paired his iPhone with an M5 iPad Pro using Sidecar to turn the tablet into a field monitor.

Filmmaker Dhritisree Sarkar used the 8x optical zoom on the iPhone 17 Pro Max to capture tightly framed emotional close-ups. The 200 mm equivalent focal length helped isolate subjects and compress scenes for a more dramatic look. By pairing the phone with the Blackmagic Camera app, her crew used an iPad Pro to carefully review intricate prosthetic work in real time.

The initiative is meant to show how accessible camera hardware can change the production pipeline for independent cinema. All four short films from the MAMI Select program are now available on the MAMI YouTube channel.
