Apple Overhauls XR Roadmap, Focuses on Smart Glasses [Kuo]

Apple has overhauled its XR product roadmap, shifting resources toward lightweight smart glasses with broader mass-market appeal, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The major strategy change, which appears to sideline future Vision Pro development in favor of smart glasses, was reportedly signed off by incoming CEO John Ternus.



Based on Kuo's latest supply chain checks, the XR roadmap he published about a year ago is no longer a useful reference. For now, only two smart glasses projects remain visible in Apple's plans. The restructuring aligns with earlier indications that Apple had begun deprioritizing enclosed vision headsets as consumer interest in the category cooled.


The first of these remaining projects is a pair of display-less AI glasses expected to launch in 2027. Similar in concept to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, the device would lack a physical screen and instead rely on audio and cameras to provide contextual information through Siri and Apple Intelligence. We previously noted that Apple is exploring premium acetate frames for the hardware, aiming for a design that looks indistinguishable from traditional eyewear.

A display-equipped AR/XR smart glasses device powered by optical waveguides is still in development, but the timeline has reportedly slipped. Kuo now expects the product to launch in 2029, later than previously anticipated. Developing lightweight transparent displays capable of overlaying digital content onto the real world while maintaining acceptable battery life remains one of the industry's biggest technical challenges.
