Apple is preparing to update the Mac Studio with improved cooling designed to better handle increasingly demanding on-device AI workloads.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on internal changes for the high-end desktop, including a better heat sink to improve thermal performance as future Mac Studio models take on more demanding on-device AI workloads. As Apple's AI capabilities continue to expand, higher sustained CPU and GPU workloads are expected to place greater demands on the system's cooling, making thermal efficiency increasingly important for maintaining peak performance.
The next Mac Studio refresh is expected to feature Apple's M5 Ultra chip later this year. Apple has previously tested M5 Ultra configurations with up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and as much as 768GB of unified memory, positioning the workstation for demanding professional workloads such as software development, video production, scientific computing, and large local AI models. Looking further ahead, the company is reportedly planning to skip higher-end M6 chips in favor of an M7 family for its professional Macs, with an M7 Ultra-powered Mac Studio currently targeted for 2028.
Apple is not expected to redesign the Mac Studio alongside the M5 Ultra update, suggesting the focus will remain on internal improvements rather than external changes. The company has historically kept its desktop designs in place for years, leaving the Mac Pro enclosure largely unchanged for about six years before it was discontinued and using the same Mac mini design for roughly 15 years before introducing its current chassis.
The Mac Studio arrives at an unusual time for Apple's Mac lineup. Demand for headless Macs has surged as developers increasingly use them to run autonomous coding agents, while a global memory shortage has constrained supply. Those same component pressures recently prompted Apple to raise the base price of the Mac Studio to $2,499. Apple has not indicated when it plans to introduce the updated Mac Studio, but Gurman reports the M5 Ultra model remains on track to launch later this year.
