RIM's Angered Response to Apple

RIM's Angered Response to Apple

Posted July 17, 2010 at 3:03am by iClarified

RIM has responded to Apple's "misleading comments" by Steve Jobs at the iPhone 4 press event, claiming that they had "avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4."

Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.

im apple zombie but i think steve screwed this time and RIM is totally right in this case, it is true that if u don't like it don't buy it, and if u bought it return it same thing tmobile told my cousin when he had prob with nexus 3g problem. but they shouldn't have demoed other phones with signal droppage.

My BB only drop from 4 bars to 2 when I pick it up and hold in any way. of course my iPhone 4 does not drop at all unless I touch the lower left corner when it's not in it's bumper case (which is pretty much never...)

Apple would be such a good company if they'd (particularly Steve Jobs) just take responsibility for their actions!

Wow, that's WAY overboard! I would never wish Jobs ill and I'm glad he beat his disease. But he does need to get his head on straight!

It's simple....if you don't like the phone, don't buy it. If you bought it & don't like it, return it. That simple people! It's like buying anything else in this world. Not a new concept.

It's the Carrier (ATT) that is most at fault. No one is owning up to that.

I like the iPhone 4, but RIM is right. There's never been a problem with any phone like the iPhone 4 has

No problem with my i4. Steve just CALLED OUT ALL THE OTHER PHONES. If you want better reception, use a whip antenna.

Let see don't show that other companies have this problem. Let's act like everyone has this dropped call problem. Man take your phone back if you have this problem of dropped calls but if your just a little bar watcher learn to enjoy your phone. Don't be a sheep and follow all of the complainers, you complain about fanboys but you act like one in the opposite way. The iPhone 4 kicks butt for me, I can't really find one thing wrong with mine. I am also traveling this weekend and haven't seen any issues. Really and I'm in a low signal area, can't get it to drop a bar. I don't understand I can hold my phone with all areas of my phone covered and it won't drop a bar at all. Maybe the ones that have dropped calls just need to take in for a trade, seriously how can mine work so good and others have a total opposite effect? Take yours in for a trade and get on with life, or get a iPhone if you don't have one and quit talking about something you don't even own. I not just following Steve I knew it was a small percentage of users with a major problem, it seems like a lot when you read about it but really if just 3% of opening day users had this problem that would be over 30,000 people and that's not a big error rate. So once again return your frea*in phone for a new one or switch and get on with life.

Steve Jobs responded to press with un-responsibly. His claims with all antennas are same problems with all other smart phones. He is ridiculous irresponsible person. They should pay for their cost of designing improper iphone. However, I have 3GS iPhone and upgraded from 3.1.3 to 4.0 firmware. I leave my 3GS iphone on the table while I am talking with my friends. It drops calls many times without losing a signal bar. I even use headset to talk with my friend; my friend doesn't hear what I am saying. The antenna shows full bar signal. I didn't have problem after I upgraded to 4.0. Inclusion, the firmware of 4.0 is a biggest problem. They should be fixed by review all the code of the new firmware. Don't give out the irresponsible statement to the user. It is shamed on you Steve and Apples.

I don't use a case or bumper, Steve Jobs. Sorry to the ones with bad experiences but most of you act like it's every iPhone 4 and that's far from the truth. The Apple store is loaded with people and it's not for returns, at least that's not what I have seen. Everytime I go in the employee's have done everything to help even when not under warranty. So believe what you want, I think all of you should take them to court, Apple has ruined your life. They offered you only a full refund or case for your troubles. It would make me mad too because it doesn't help a lot of you that don't even own a iPhone.

Come on Rim CEO'S , I have a blackberry and it has the same problems with iphone 4 . Don't make fun of yourself s ! Same Software , Same design nothing innovative about your phones . You should see my blackberry about 1 year usage it looks like 7 year old phone . No quality at material nor phones . I think this CEO s should quit and Steve must run RIM :)

I have a PhD in antenna design and so have been following this story with some interest. I take Mr. Jobs' point that all phone antennas suffer from attenuation whenever the phone is held by the human hand. However, the X spot he refers to in other phones is the point at the which the attenuation is at its maximum. The X spot in the iphone is a different beast altogether; at this point you are effectively short circuiting the network operator antenna with the wifi antenna. Put simply, you are effectively creating an electrically longer antenna, which is not designed for receiving a network operator signal. This is what I assume RIM has taken exception to as their antenna performance issues are attributed to attenuation, not altering the effective antenna length as is the case with the iphone 4. Mr Jobs also mentions that we can't overcome the laws of physics; this would be such a humbling admission had it not been for the subsequent flawed justification of the iphone problems outlined above. Furthermore, it was proudly stated that the phone antenna was tested in anechoic chambers. This is the standard process for any antenna which determines how it will perform in a perfect environment (i.e. no multipath, or outside interference). Also the phone is tested in an environment where the phone is mounted by a jig (not the human hand). Unfortunately, phones don't operate in perfect environments; these real life tests, such as a reverberation chamber are very different from the anechoic chamber environment and there were no mention of any such tests in yesterday's talk. It's a sad day when a CEO of a respectable company cherry picks various laws of physics and tests to try and conceal a huge R&D failing

Steve Jobs shouldn't have dragged others into their own created problems. Jobs calls it the Best phone of all times and when it messes up he draws comparisons with other phones. Their shouldn't be any comparison since iPhone 4 is suppose so be far superior then other smartphones. So why Apple compared such and "amazing and incredible" device with those everyday smartphones. Maybe Steve Jobs know that iPhone is NOT That amazing after all.

I'm with javed. Yes I have a IPhone 4 and yes I got the problem but I fix it with a rubber case that I got for $5 bucks. But when Jobs compare the iPhone with others phones he brought the quality of Iphone 4 down. One more thing I got a 3G iPhone and I don't have the problem. Yes I know the problem is with the revolutionary iPhone 4 desing/build and apple FAILED with this new desing. I bet the newers iPhone 4 will be desing differently from the first batch and the problem will go away. What does that mean? They FAILED they learned from the mistake and boom boom we all forget about the apple FAIL.

Javed - July 17, 2010 at 5:00am
@Tobby. You're right and it looks like the second batch will arrive after September 30. So Apple is giving out Bumpers and cases only till they sell out their current batch of defected iPhones/

I love apple, I have an iPhone and a bookpro and a g5 but I have to admit that iPhone is a toy and blackberry is a tool. Sorry guys but that's a fact. And pls let's admit that apple Made a mistake iPhone 4 is defective!!!!!!

It may be a toy to you, maybe you just like what you use. But basically your like a lot of posters you don't even have the problem but you reply like you know and further supports Jobs statement that it's over blown.
