I have a 2g, 3g, 3gs, and 4. The 2g is running a modified version of 3.1.2 called whited00r. It has multasking, a host of 4.0 abilities, and is quite fast for a 2g. Battery life is not affected much either. The 3g is running 4.1 and is a dog even with no added apps. 4.0 made the 3g unusable. Again 4.1 of the 3g is a dog with or without music, added apps, contacts. Games that crash the 3g run well on the 2g mod. It look like at least to start off with 4.2 has some improvements. 3gs runs fine except for no battery life unless you turn 3g, cell data, and location off.

I think 3G users should just stick to 3.1.3 if they haven't upgraded.
