Help the Chronic Dev-Team Find a Jailbreak Vulnerability Using Their New Tool

Posted November 27, 2011 at 9:28am by iClarified
The Chronic Dev-Team has a released a tool to collect crash reports from iOS devices in order to find vulnerabilities that could lead to an untethered jailbreak.

Addressing preliminary reports that the Chronic Dev-Team would have a jailbreak ready for iOS 5, p0sixninja says that Apple closed several exploits before the final version of the software was released.

I was excited to announce that the Chronic Dev team had already discovered 5 different exploits for use in our upcoming jailbreak. Unfortunately, that announcement was a bit premature, because in the subsequent weeks, Apple found & patched a (critical) few of those exploits, between the beta versions we used for testing and the final release of iOS5 on October 12.

In order to find more vulnerabilities as fast as possible, the team has developed a tool which will copy the crash reports from your device and analyze them to locate potential exploits. The tool will also remove the crash reports from your device and modify your iTunes installation to prevent uploading of that diagnostic information to Apple.

The program copies all the crash reports off your device (which, under normal circumstances, would be sent right back to Apple), and instead sends this data to a secure, private server hosted by your friendly Chronic Dev team. Next, our program proceeds to neuter your copy of iTunes, simply by changing your settings to prevent your computer from sending any further diagnostic information from your device to Apple.

Using this agglomeration of your crash reports and our ninja skills, Chronic Dev will be able to quickly pinpoint vulnerabilities in various programs by using the same techniques Apple currently employs. At the very least, your data will help point us in the direction of which applications are the most vulnerable, so we can focus our time & energy on these with laser-like intensity. And, of course, this will also prevent Apple from accessing all your valuable data, just so they can then turn around and use it against you.

A Mac beta version of the software can be downloaded from here. The Windows version should be available within 24 hours.

To use the application, simply plug in your iOS device, launch the app, and click the Do It! button.

I don't want to be a pessimist, but if crash reports are being sent anyway to apple.. how would sending it to these guys help? Apple have tons of people, these guys only a few.. and wouldn't both side work to close these loopholes too? all those loopholes and stuff these chronic guys talked about, never have I seen proof of it, nor a simple working concept like what musclenerd has shown so far. i call - for lack of a better word - bullshit.

hey raja - i think when you are in a position where people are listening to what you say - you sorta have to be a little responsible with that power - not just taunt people about certain things and never deliver in hopes of trying to attract readership and tweet follows. sure they never charged money or anything for their free jailbreak tool (which by the way iphone dev team tool is *also* free) - but it just begs the question - what *significant* contributions have this chronic dev team brought along so far? jailbreak tools are many and plenty these days and all are free except the scam ones.

Oh Good LORD, I'll settle for a tethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S @ this point. Un-tethered really isn't that much of a big deal

Hahahaha. Let me tell you... What you, supposedly, have in terms of English skills, you lack in knowledge of History. The English never fought wars to spread their language. Were on Earth did you get that from? The spread of languages is merely a byproduct of the conquest of countries and new lands (among other things). No one ever fought to spread a language... Moreover, what do you make of this? "...fought thousands of years of wars..."; not only is this phrase incorrectly expressed, it makes no historical sense whatsoever! The use of two consecutive "of" followed by two plural nouns makes this sentence mean that the English fought thousands of years and fought thousands of wars. Does that make sense? Thousands of wars! Wow what a violent, and incorrect, History the've taught you! Fought thousands of years? How can you fight time? I think you meant to say that "The English have fought in many wars over thousands of years to spread their language..." This is a correctly written sentence, though it is still historically inaccurate... Before insulting someone who is obviously speaking a English as a second or maybe even a third or fourth language, why don't you make sure your own English is correct? How many languages do you know by any chance? I personally know three... I first learned Spanish (being raised in Puerto Rico). I then started learning English in elementary school. Note the stark contrast between other nations and the US, where kids are only taught one language in elementary/middle school and, some students, have the option of studying a second language in high school. Of course those kids will end up speaking that secondary language just like Raja, yet you don't insult them. It immediately becomes obvious that this is a matter of ethnicity.... Anyhow I learned my third language, Chinese, in college. How many languages do you know? Of course at this point you'll lie just to conserve whatever pride you have left... In any case, it is not uncommon for people of old world nations to learn 4-5 languages. To be clear, I'm not talking only about the Middle East, I'm talking about Germany, Finland, Turkey, etc.
