iOS Generates Google Four Times More Revenue Than Android?

The Guardian notes that Apple devices generate Google four times as much revenue as Android devices, according to data provided in Google's trial with Oracle.

Android generated less than $550m in revenues for Google between 2008 and the end of 2011, if figures provided by the search giant as part of a settlement offer with Oracle ahead of an expected patent and copyright infringement trial are an accurate guide. The figures also suggest that Apple devices such as the iPhone, which use products such as its Maps as well as Google Search in its Safari browser, generated more than four times as much revenue for Google as its own handsets in the same period.

In 2010, Oracle sued Google claiming that Android infringes on its Sun patents and copyright in Java. The suit has now been reduced to two patents. Google made Oracle a pre-trial settlement offer of $2.8 million for the period from 2008 to 2011 with a promise to pay 0.5% of ongoing Android revenue on one patent and 0.015% on the other. At a combined rate of .515%, Google is suggesting that Android's total revenue from the end of 2008 through the end of 2011 was only $543 million.


In October, Google CEO Larry Page said the company was "seeing a huge positive revenue impact from mobile, which has grown 2.5 times in the last 12 months to a run rate of over $2.5bn." If Android has only contributed $543 million in revenue than it would appear that iOS, where Google provides search, maps, YouTube, etc, is largely responsible for the remain $2 billion in revenue.
