In an interview Phil Schiller talks about why the iPhone 5 doesn't have NFC or wireless charging, reports AllThingsD.
Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller said that Passbook alone does what most customers want and works without existing merchant payment systems. It's not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem, Schiller said. "Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today."
In regards to wireless charging, Schiller notes the charger still needs to be plugged into the wall so it's unclear how much convenience they add. "Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated," Schiller said.
When asked why the new Lightning dock connector was introduced, Schiller said it wasn't possible to make devices as thin as they new iPhones or iPods using the old connector.
Notably, he said they didn't take changing the connector lightly. "This is the new connector for many years to come."

I'm sure they'll adopt it later. iFans can't see why it's important because Apple tells them.
iSheeps.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, Apple haters can vent their frustration here. It may take a few years for Google and other manufactures to catch up if they don't want lawsuits to wipe them out.
I am a windows 8 fanboy, hehe.

Google to catch up? Catch up on what? I'm not saying Android is a better OS, but it's def more advanced than a closed iOS. Even the hardware isn't all that on the new iPhone.
iPhone = outdated tech. nothing "innovative"

Who cares about wireless charging? Plus, now that the phone is even thinner, some third party company can make something for those who really want that.

Am I the only one scared of security implications of adding NFC. Barcode reading does what I need, I use the Starbucks app everyday. Passbook extends that further.

That is so true. As for charging mat, no matter how you charge it has to be plugged in, how does it make it harder for any one to use, and if added to other apple items just put it on mat and it will charge. Thats why they have not done it. Wont make money out of us having to buy new leads and plugs. Rip of apple. Again could have made a great phone? Yet again its be left short if what could or should have been, so they can bring another updated phone out in 6/8 months.

So that they can add it next version and sell it to us like a new phone.
