Square Enix Blocks Paid Version of Deus Ex: The Fall From Being Played on Jailbroken Devices

Square Enix has blocked legitimately purchased versions of Deus Ex: The Fall from being playable on jailbroken devices.

Redditors began reporting the news shortly after release on July 10th. The move was likely a poor attempt to prevent pirating of the game; instead, it left many of its customers unable to play the game they had paid for. Of course, jailbreaking your iPhone is completely legal even under the limited exceptions that the White House is working to extend.

Early customers were not warned that the game would not work; however, the description has now been updated to read.

** Please be aware, the Deus Ex: The Fall play experience is currently restricted on jail broken devices. Do not purchase if you have voided your warranty and have Jail broken your device.

Although, Square Enix does not appear to be apologetic about blocking the game for jailbreakers, it does recognize that it needed to inform buyers before a purchase was made. Thus, according to the official statement received by Eurogamer, the company will release an update next week to remove the block.

Official Statement:
"We have not been clear in our communication earlier this week when we launched Deus Ex: The Fall. We did not state clearly that the game would not support jailbroken devices and so we will be switching this off via an update, so that all the supported iOS devices will be able to play the game in the near future."

"We feel it's the right thing to do in this situation and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so we'll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels."

You can still get it on your phone without paying for it. If you have certificates just sign it and it will install on your non-jailbroken iPhone for FREE. I just got it and it works on iOS 7.

Simply install a tweak called xCon from Cydia and you are good to go. It also works for direct Tv

Bought the game for the iPad mini and it doesn't work right...not because of jailbreak but because of memory consumption. Literally have on average 20mb ram when playing this game. Once it gets below 14 it crashes. This happens every 3-5 minutes. They need to release an update to improve this. Unless you have an iPad 3 or 4, it's not worth it.

No, rooting isn't allowed or recommended. But people still do it. It's a personal choice.

Rooting and jail breaking is not illegal, it is typically frowned upon by companies (due to the fact it makes it easier to infringe copyright) especially Apple devices. However, Android OS is VERY easy to install cracked apps on anyway due to the developer options allowing non-signed "apk's" to be installed. In my opinion, no company should ever be allowed to actively block games from being played on jail broken devices. They should, however, be allowed to actively block apps that are confirmed to be downloaded illegally. Android apps already have securities like this in place in most high end apps. That being said they are easily bypassed using a rooted device.

The key is, there NO way to stop illegal downloads. However, most research shows that people would rather pay for products they plan to use, as Apple has shown with music and most apps (at least $.99 apps, not so much for $49.99 apps). The people that download cracked apps, music, whatnot, are the people that wouldn't ordinarily purchase the material. So essentially, claims of losses of Millions are hokum, and actually bootleg software serves as an ad for legitimate users.

Jail breaking is your choice. They can't limit a person for wanting to do it. Warranty void or not.
