Android Powered 79% of Smartphones Shipped in 2013 [Chart]

Android powered 79% of smartphones shipping 2013, according to a new Canalys report.

Just shy of 1 billion handsets (998 million) shipped in full year 2013, a 44% increase on 2012. Android’s dominance grew with the platform running on 79% (785 million) of the devices shipped in 2013, up from 68% in 2012. Conversely, Apple’s iOS share fell from 20% to 15%, despite shipments increasing to 154 million. Microsoft saw a percentage point share rise to 3% as shipments increased 90% in 2013 to 32.1 million, driven by Nokia’s Lumia devices, and putting it ahead of BlackBerry, at 19.8 million. Samsung also performed strongly in 2013 and strengthened its position as the world’s leading smart phone vendor. Its market share jumped from 30% in 2012 to 32% in 2013. With Apple in second place, Huawei edged past Lenovo to claim third place, albeit by fewer than 5 million units.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, 292.8 million smartphones shipped. Apple gained some market share in Q4, rising from 13% to 17% sequentially. Samsung's market share was flat at 29% year over year, but down from 34% sequentially.

Canalys believes that Lenovo's recent deal to acquire Motorola means that Nexus supply could pass to Lenovo. That would give the company an immediate entry to the U.S. market.

"Lenovo must continue with Motorola’s speed-of-update strategy and ensure it can create pull for its smart phones through the carrier channel in mature markets when up against the might of Apple and Samsung. We expect Lenovo to double its worldwide smart phone market share within two years and achieve double-digit market share by 2015 at the latest," says Canalys VP and Principal Analyst, Chris Jones.

In OS terms, Windows Phone saw the fastest year-on-year growth among the major platforms, at 69%, despite a modest sequential decline of 6% from Q3 2013. This compares favorably with Android shipments, which grew 54% and iOS shipments, which grew just 7%.

"The soft end to the year stopped Microsoft from achieving still more positive growth," said Shanghai-based Canalys Analyst, Jingwen Wang. "Market uncertainty and caution affected Nokia’s performance in Q4, with Microsoft’s acquisition of its devices business yet to complete, as did arguably insufficient marketing, as Nokia and Microsoft failed to stimulate sufficient demand for the latest Lumia products to deliver a seasonal sales boost. With Lumia accounting for such a dominant portion of Windows Phone shipments, the growth of the OS faltered too. It will be vital that on completion of the acquisition, integration takes place quickly and thoughtfully. Microsoft has much to do if it is to continue carving out a growing share of the smart phone market, not least driving the platform down to new entry-level price points, delivering innovation and new features, particularly at the high-end, and proactively working with, supporting and encouraging developers to commit to building compelling apps, and bring its app story closer to parity with its competitors. It cannot afford lengthy delays or distractions, and the combined Windows Phone devices team needs to hit the ground running."

U wish. If only 50% of the shipments are being sold, every company will be bankrupt. But nope. They are sold.

Not true at all. Look at Microsoft. They shipped how many surface tablets and sold maybe half. Then they ended up writing the loses off. 900 million dollars to be exact. I bet it happens to more companies than you realize. They just don't report it to the general public.

Here is the problem. Most "cheap" handsets are good enough now. Apple best bet is to get people stuck in their ecosystem. Once you are in then it's hard to get out. So what's the gateway drug? 5c? Too expensive. But apple doesn't make cheap products. They will never capture that market.

Exactly K. And another good thing about apple products is that they hold there value for a number of years. Unlike androids.

Does anyone wonder? Android is at last 5 years ahead of iOS, so why shouldn't the shipments tell the same thing.

In terms of technology its at last 5 years ahead, with supporting multiple architectures and processors. Being more Secure than iOS (you know that the NSA has 100% success chance for iOS). Its even so good that you can make your own Android. You can remove whatever you don't like, replace what every you dont like and iOS 7 made it just worse with thousands of bugs and the childish user interface. Android was 1 or 2 years ahead of iOS but with iOS7 its now at last 5 years ahead.

Try telling that to the fandroids and watch them foam at the mouth; should tell them that Justin Beiber also sells millions of albums too but that doesn't make him a good artist.

I have a friend that I go to school with that just recently told me that in less than a year he has had over 12 android phones replaced. Just in the last 6 months he's had to get 5 new htc ones replaced. And before that he had samsungs and Motorolas phones. The funny thing is is that he hates apple products and says he'd never get an iPhone. I told him you've had over 12 android phones take a crap on you in just under a year while I've had my iPhone 4S for over 2 years and I still have the original one I bought. I said what does that tell you? The phones you're buying are crap.

I was wondering the same. Shipped does not equal sold.
