SpaceX has reportedly developed a prototype for a sleek, handset-like AI device designed to integrate technology from xAI.
The hardware is described as slimmer than an iPhone and runs on a proprietary operating system rather than iOS or Android. According to the Wall Street Journal, the device would use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. SpaceX recently showed it to some investors and other stakeholders ahead of its initial public offering, though executives cautioned that the project remains at an early stage. The design could still change, and it is unclear whether the hardware will ultimately reach the market.
Such hardware could also make Elon Musk less reliant on Apple and Google, whose mobile platforms currently serve as the primary way users access xAI's chatbot. The report notes that Musk has long expressed frustration with Apple's control over app distribution for X. While he previously denied rumors that his companies were developing a smartphone, according to people familiar with the matter, the project draws on the philosophy behind his vision for an "everything app."
The effort comes as the tech industry races to build hardware centered around artificial intelligence. OpenAI is also developing its own AI-agent smartphone to challenge established platforms, while Apple itself is preparing AI-focused wearables and smart glasses for the coming years.
