It was former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer that approved the launch of Microsoft Office for iPad, not new CEO Satya Nadella, according to a Reddit AMA held by the Office for iPad team.

Ya right~! 1% of the 12 million users who downloaded and actually paid for it's overpriced subscription to use it. The other 99% deleted the apps immediately after they found out bout the subscription fee. Facepalmed !
