I just got my iphone 3GS and it came with 3.0.1 FW.
I want to Jailbreak and unlock it however I have a doubt. I have a mac and I know I should use RedSn0w, the only doubt I have is regarding if I should just go ahed open RedSn0w and select the 3.0.1 firmware (I already downloaded) and follow the steps or should I restore to 3.0 FW and then open RedSn0w an select 3.0.1 firmware?
Thanks for all the help!

The comment in the article:
** If you would like to jailbreak on the 3.0.1 firmware you can follow these exact instructions; however, in Step Two restore using this 3.0.1 iPhone firmware file instead of the 3.0 one. Continue with the instructions as indicated.**
Is not true. redsn0w only works with the 3.0 firmware. If you select the 3.1 firmware with it, it will say "Unable to recognize specified IPSW". So it appears that the only solution is to downgrade to 3.0.
To make matters worse, iTunes no longer allows restoring to an IPSW of a version less than 3.1. So to downgrade or even install a new IPSW, you'll have to downgrade iTunes if you're using the latest version. I *assume* that downgrading iTunes will let you install older IPSWs, but I didn't test that myself. I'm hoping that the DevTeam releases a new redsn0w soon that accepts the 3.0.1 firmware.

iPhone 3G on 3.0.1 I'm stuck in step 2. I've downloaded the A400 restore Ispw gile. I/\'ve resyored my Iphone via iTunes and have the 3.0.1 with 04.26.08 band. How do we use the A400 file in the second step, it says to open it, while the iTunes is restoring the phone, will the iPhone use this file from my computer to restore?
On steps 3 and 5 it indicates to select the A341 restore file, do we, 3G 3.0.1 users, use this A341 files or select the A400 file on these steps???
Sorry but I need help///////

Hey,
I've got a 3GS 16Gb, bought outright from apple. It was on 3.0.1 when I bought it.
I was successfully able to jailbreak it using redsn0w, without the need to restore in itunes 9 (it wouldn't let me restore to 3.0.1 anyways).
The jailbreak works like a charm, with cydia and icy installed and all, but the battery life is a nightmare now!!
It goes from full charge to power-off in less than 7 hours on standy!! The iPhone is also constantly heated as if it was processing something... (3G, wifi and bluetooth are all off)
Any idea or similar cases? Your thoughts are most appreciated, as it's impossible to leave the house now that my battery dies on me every couple of hours :)
Cheers.

Same here. I have read that since the release of the 3.1 fw one can not do the restore to anything except 3.1?? Not sure if this is true or not?

It's true. Apple has effectively disallowed using iTunes to restore any firmware except 3.1.
A solution may be to downgrade iTunes to 8.2, which is available here:
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/06/download-all-versions-of-itunes-for-windows-mac/
I haven't tried that. Back up your music folder if you do.

So i restarted my phone, and it was functioning properly, except without cydia. Why doesnt it reboot more quickly? or am i doing something wrong..

Hi to the Dev. Team from Augsburg, Germany
Many thanks for your tutorial and instructions.
Just jailbreaked my new iPhone 3GS and unlocked it (bought in the US).
SIM from non tied operator in Germany just works fine. I am glad I do not need to use Deutsche Telekom and I am happy with good plan of BASE (eplus) which provides Internet Flat Rate for just 10 / month.
Keep on helping the free world of Telco users.

I am stuck on step 2. I have tried downloading firmware from several different links but iTunes still won't let me use it. I am on 3.0.1 and it won't let me change it AT ALL. I've been sitting at my computer for 5 hours trying to unlock my iphone. Why are Apple such assholes? Without the firmware, Cydia doesn't install on the iPhone and when I reboot, nothing has changed. Somebody PLEASE help me, I want to use my phone.

Hey rebecca, I have teh 3G w/ 3.0.1. so I had no trouble jailbreacking the iPhone, but could not unlock it...I think I followed the exact instructions, but still no luck, so I had the phone downgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.0, and jailbroken again and finally unlocked, and now it works fine..... so you have to downgrade it to 3.0 firmware...

choose the 3.0 FW for redsnow, not the 3.0.1 [which is what you are choosing], even though the phone is updated to 3.0.1. Redsn0w need the 3.0 FW

What can be wrong? Thanks in advance.

You should use 3.0 firmware. 3.0.1 is needed only in step TWO. Just done it with my iPhone 3GS and worked great. As noted in 3rd paragraph:
** If you would like to jailbreak on the 3.0.1 firmware you can follow THESE EXACT INSTRUCTIONS; however, in Step Two (AND ONLY IN STEP TWO) restore using this 3.0.1 iPhone firmware file instead of the 3.0 one. Continue with the instructions as indicated.**

Original Question:
"How come the actual instructional screens for RedSnOw 0.8 in this tutorial are substantial different than those which are actually shown when running RedSnOw 0.8? I can't get the Jailbreak to work on my iPhone #GS on OS 3.0.1. If anyone can give me guidance please do so. Thanks in advance."
Found Answer:
"The instructional sheets in the tutorial are correct. The mistake I made was that I pointed it towards the ipsw for iPhone 3G instead of the correct ipsw for iPhone 3Gs. Hope this helps anyone else who may have had this problem."

Okay, I just restored and tried the jailbreak again, I install Cydia, afterwards I rebooted. Installed MobileSubstrate, rebooted, all was fine. installed Winterboard, crashed on reboot. stuck at Apple Logo and Spinning gear of death. Any ideas? I was at 3.0.1, pointed to 3.0, as always, never had a problem with the 3g. This 3G S is giving me fits.

The only "trick" is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one.

I decided to go ahead and jailbreak my 3G S today, instead of waiting for 3.1 and a new jailbreak. It worked fine, but on installing MobileSubstrate, it froze when "restarting springboard." I did a hard reset, as I read on a forum somewhere, and then it crashed at the spinning gear icon with the Apple Logo. I just did a restore and before attempting the jailbreak again, is there something else I should install before Mobile Substrate? And this was all done through Cydia, no ICY installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My 3GS phone recently died, and I have had to replace it. When I tried to DFU to get the iBEC and iBSS files, using a Mac running itunes 8.2.1 and the terminal script method, I succeeded in getting the files but when the phone tried to authorise with Apple's activation servers it failed with the message "Unsupported Carrier/SIM" etc.
Note:
1) I have (had!) a legitimately purchased and activated 3GS on, and I have now tried this procedure with several replacement phones.
2) Each of these phones was obtained from the Apple Store, and was successfully activated with my SIM, in the store.
3) Each time I got it home and tried to DFU it to get the iBEC and iBSS files off it, it was totally bricked at the end of the restore process because iTunes refuses to re-activate it. The same result, every time. The phone restores (after I get the iBEC and iBSS files dumped), and when it does, it won't recognise the legitimate SIM card, or indeed any iPhone SIM card.
4) DFU-ing and restoring it again doesn't help. It won't re-activate. Period! Even after a "factory reset/restore".
5) I have tried going back to iTunes 8.2 instead of 8.2.1, with a fresh phone from the Apple Store, which WAS activated in-store successfully (as were each of them - I've tried 5 replacements now!) and got the same result.
Can anyone shed any light on WTF is going on?? I have had to unlock my iPhone (which I didn't want to do/have no need of doing) to get my legitimate O2 SIM to work! Everything works on the phone, but no push notifications for IM+ or fring etc come through, and ultimately, while I want to be able to jailbreak the phone, I don't want or need to have to unlock it.

When it tells you that it is waiting for reboot, try unplugging the USB and then plugging it back in. I am not sure if this works the same for the 3G S, but that is what I had to do some a few of the 3g's I jailbroke

Yes, unplugging the USB connection and replugging began the boot process. Also "Done" does not seem to mean done as the iPhone says it is installing "Bundles" Wait until the iPhone actually reboots, then hit the finish button.
Thanks
