Why would I need an Apple Watch to invite someone over for coffee? I can just call from a landline. I am not sure about these devices.

People use the watch to take most advantages the phone does to save battery life and eliminate the need for having to pull your phone out, plus the gestures it has for responding and writing back line art that animates when you send it to them, and much more.
