Apple Pay Usage on Black Friday Declined Year Over Year [Chart]

The usage rate of Apple Pay on Black Friday declined significantly from last year, reports InfoScout. The data is based on 300,000 Americans submitting pictures of receipts through apps on their smartphones.

We found Apple Pay usage at its lowest rate since we’ve started tracking it, being used for only 2.7% of Apple Pay-eligible transactions. This is a fairly marked decrease from what we saw last year on Black Friday, when iPhone 6 owners used Apple Pay for 4.9% of eligible transactions at participating merchants. Of course, back then the primary owners of Apple Pay-enabled devices were early—and technologically curious—adopters, whereas now the technology is in the hands of the broader population. Below you can see the usage over time in our quarterly Apple Pay tracking reports.

In comparison, Android owners used their device to pay for just 2.0% of eligible transactions. PayPay was the most used mobile wallet option.

Overall, the most common method of paying for a Black Friday bargain was credit card (79% for iPhone and 74% for Android).

Take a look at the charts below for more details...

I look for NFC Locations near me with the apps " MasterCard Nearby" & "Pay Finders". I use it at Walgreens, FarmFresh, BP, Subway.,etc

FYI......https://www.applepaysupplies.com/applepaykit.html This link allows businesses to order free decals from Apple to show that they are accepting Apple Pay. I ordered for my business few months back and never received one :(

Has nothing to do with how busy it is. Has everything to do with how IGNORANT the employees of places that have NFC enabled payment stations are. Most places I go to I ask if they accept "Apple Pay," I look for the NFC logo and in many places they have the logo but the employees either don't know anything about it or just claim "No, we don't accept 'Apple Pay'." Other places like IKEA, depends on what employee you get in the cafeteria will either know how to enable the payment to go to NFC or won't. Few stores like Macy's actually do it beautifully, the outdated payment terminals should be replaced. If a customer waves NFC enabled device nearby the payment should just work instead of having to force employee to key-in something additionally. Again, in summary Apple Pay worked faster for me in my shopping than a credit card would. ESPECIALLY in places that have to read the credit card's chip, those machines take roughly 20-30 sec to process a payment and in some places actually wouldn't read the chip.

It's because of how busy it is.

I feel it's because of the lack of awareness and number of places accepting Apple Pay.

I would use it a lot more if it actually worked at places. I typically use it at Walgreens and now Firehouse Subs. Just not seeing many options for using it even if there is a contactless reader of some sort never seems to work... I have the watch and the phone and love Apple Pay but the business adoption rate must be low....
