Why Apple Isn't Launching iMessage for Android

Walt Mossberg reveals why Apple isn't bringing iMessage to Android as rumored prior to WWDC in an article for The Verge.

When I asked a senior Apple executive why iMessage wasn’t being expanded to other platforms, he gave two answers. First, he said, Apple considers its own user base of 1 billion active devices to provide a large enough data set for any possible AI learning the company is working on. And, second, having a superior messaging platform that only worked on Apple devices would help sales of those devices — the company’s classic (and successful) rationale for years.

This is pretty much the expected and logical reason for not expanding iMessage to Android. With services such as Apple Music, the company makes money off subscribers. However, iMessage on Android would cost them potential customers.

They shouldn't be allowed to make the same mistake as blackberry did with their BBM.

More like the other way around. Updates come faster to main stream android devices and when they stop supporting that device there will always be a big community for making custom Roma for it. And the life is a lot longer then apples 2-3 major updates.

Android is a stolen product. If it was my call I would never make an app for Android. I do, however, want more Google apps for iPhone. They're fantastic.

I was hoping iMessage would come to android. My parents aren't involved with social apps or sites, but my main point with how messaging works despite that is that I own an iPhone and my parents own android and when sending/receiving messages, it sometimes takes days upon weeks to get/send them.

While I agree that iMessage is more efficient, if your parents experience more than a few minutes of delay there is something wrong with their phone, SIM card or network, or they have a lot of interference.
