President Elect Donald Trump reveals that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates both called him following his election win.
In an interview with the New York Times, Trump said that he told Cook he wanted Apple to build a big plant in the United States and would create the incentives for Apple to do that.
I was honored yesterday, I got a call from Bill Gates, great call, we had a great conversation, I got a call from Tim Cook at Apple, and I said, ‘Tim, you know one of the things that will be a real achievement for me is when I get Apple to build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States, where instead of going to China, and going to Vietnam, and going to the places that you go to, you’re making your product right here.’ He said, ‘I understand that.’ I said: ‘I think we’ll create the incentives for you, and I think you’re going to do it.
Trump continue to promise a large tax cut for corporations and less regulations.
We’re going for a very large tax cut for corporations, which you’ll be happy about.’ But we’re going for big tax cuts, we have to get rid of regulations, regulations are making it impossible. Whether you’re liberal or conservative, I mean I could sit down and show you regulations that anybody would agree are ridiculous. It’s gotten to be a free-for-all. And companies can’t, they can’t even start up, they can’t expand, they’re choking.
Rumor has it that Apple has already asked both Foxconn and Pegatron, the two big companies that assemble its devices to investigate opening a plant in America. While Foxconn agreed, Pegatron reportedly refused citing high costs.
Do you think an Apple plant in America is feasible? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
I agree they should build plant in the us. The problems are many, If the head HANCHO reads this... The corporation taxes are near 40% in the us , healthcare cost, overhead costs, IRA and 4% employers tax . The overhead in the US currently close to 50%... ...profitable margins overseas about 30%-40% have to include damaged phones, ipads, etc replacing ) The tax rates overseas very as low at 8-12%. The factory's are all already built, the labor force is already skilled and ready to work . The health insurance is paid for already and taken care of.. It was cost billions to build factories in the use, weather the phones control the markets without huge incentives would not be worth it
Perhaps he is doing what everyone else is doing and manufacturing his products over seas to save money. What Trump is trying to do is change how businesses operate in the USA by cutting taxes to business owners. If businesses can save more on taxes then that money can go to employ more people or even expand their business and offer more jobs in return. Having the manufacturing plant or three in the USA sounds like a great idea for heaps of new jobs. I like the idea.
Trump is still president-elect guys. Why are you slamming him for going overseas for his manufacturing? Lots of manufacturing is done overseas today because that's what was written under Obama. Now you have Trump stepping in and doing a 180 by shutting down the China - USA trade and giving people jobs. You want to work and get paid don't you?
First, Obama didn't 'write' anything about sending trade/manufacturing over seas, he is not to blame for that, it's been decades in the making. I think you have a point though, the only way for a US plant to be feasible is by having some sort of tax benefit to cover the increased cost in labor and healthcare and overheads and such. They might also increase taxes on companies that want to move to keep them from leaving in the first place. It's also important to remember that most of these companies don't own their own factories so they would have to have the third party Chinese factories move here or open their own. That could be a challenge.
Perhaps Trump himself can make huge plants here in America as well. I mean, he manufactures everything overseas too. That would be great. Trump should practice what he preaches.
I agree sadly, because many can't even spell correctly. I would say the education system is all there but many people refuse to really take advantage of it as much as they could. Those are not the reasons labor is shipped overseas though. Sorry to burst your bubble. It's just cheaper labor.
Exactly. To keep price down many corporations make their product outside of the USA. Needs to be fine balance what to build in the US and what outside. I just heard that Pentagon cleared that India produce F-16 and F-18 jet fighters over there (google it). Still needs to go to another approval but it just tell you how business model works. Older technology but US will still get pretty good chunk of money out of it. And many suppliers from USA will still produce parts for India at least decade or two or even longer. So, it goes both ways.
