New iTunes terms reveal that Apple is intending to release a 3.0 version of the Apple firmware.
Included in the Summary of Changes to the iTunes Terms of Service is the following:
"The Terms of Sale have been revised to clarify that you can now use iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras on Apple TV with software version 3.0 or higher"
It is likely that Apple will seed this new firmware in the very near future. Hopefully there will be some additional features as well.
