Speaker Volume Test: iPhone 8 vs. iPhone 7 [Video]

Apple says it has increased the loudness of the speakers on the iPhone 8 by 25%.

In the video below we use a sound meter to compare the speaker volume of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7.

We took the reading by placing the sound level meter directly under the Lightning port and by placing the meter midway along the side of the device. Getting an accurate sound level on the iPhone 7 and 8 is a little tricky as one speaker is positioned at the bottom of the device and the other is in the earpiece.

Take a look at the video below. A reading 10 dBA higher is about 2x as loud.

This test is wrong. The iPhone 8 uses the stereo speakers to become louder, the "ear" speaker now goes to the same volume as the bottom speaker, and this test is not including that difference.

Misleading. There is a very big difference in the ambient sound level shown on those meters before the pink noise is played. Either the meter wasn't calibrated properly or this is purposely sabotaged.

The article says, "A reading 10 dBA higher is about 2x as loud." In the first test, the iPhone 8 was 2.2 dBA's higher (101.7 - 99.5 = 2.2). Based off of the quoted scale, this will tell you the iPhone 8 was about 22% louder & 18% in the second test (90.8 - 89.0 = 1.8).

Think for yourself rather than believing the “Hype” literally. Question: Why would anyone today need a phone that is 20% louder? If the previous phone could be heard by holding it to your ear, or while using speakerphone, or listening through headphones then why raise the volume? Interesting that there is no mention of the quality of the sound. There are lots of loud boomboxes with poor quality of sound as the volume is turned up. Are they trying to suggest this is now a personal boombox? People emphasis size over quality when the artist (innovation) has left the room.

Sometimes you forget your earbuds and you’re walking down the street during the middle of the day with a bunch of cars passing by. Or maybe you’re in a restaurant eating lunch and they’re playing loud music.
