Can i add an app to apple tvOS like i would with my iPhone ? I also have a ROKU system and they have many more apps to choose from. where with my present apple tv - i can not add app.

Yes, Apple has had this capability since the Apple TV 4th Generation (2015). I can vouch for the fact that there are many more tvOS apps than when the App Store was first introduced. Not all of them work flawlessly, but most developers fix bugs in a timely manner. Some have been left at the wayside, but those are usually older games or pointless applications.
