Field was a VP of Mac hardware engineering at Apple before leaving for Telsa in 2013. In April, Musk took over production of the Model 3 himself but still described Field as "one of the world's most talented engineering execs".
Gruber suggests that Field's hire by Apple could mean the company is still interested in making actual vehicles, despite reports that have claimed the project is abandoned.
"That rumor never really made sense to me anyway", says Gruber. "Apple’s modus operandi has always been to make the whole widget. Apple makes products, not components. Field returning to Apple also suggests to me that under Mansfield’s leadership, the Titan project has regained its footing after its infamously rocky start."
