Apple may have cut production of the iPhone XR due to quality issues with Skyworks' power amplifiers, according to Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang.

Nikkei recently reported that Apple has halted plans to expand iPhone XR production and is using only 45 of the prepared assembly lines for the XR. In an investor note relayed by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Zhang suggests that reduced production levels may due to a component problem.

We believe some Printed Circuit Board (PCB) supplier shipments of HDI boards were quickly dropped this week. This may be attributable to quality issues from Skyworks PAs. We believe this potential round of iPhone XR production cuts by Apple may be attributable to the recently found PA quality issues.

Notably, Rosenblatt also believes the iPhone XR sell-through rate is weaker than expected and suggests there could be another production cut for C4Q of about 4-5 million iPhone XR units. However, the company is expected to product another 1-2 million units of the iPhone X due to promotions from some telcos this holiday season.
