Flurry Analytics has identified about 50 devices thought to be pre-release Apple Tablets in testing. These devices have been placed geographically on Apple's Cupertino campus. Testing increased dramatically in January with signs of life beginning as early as October.
On these devices, Flurry observed approximately 200 different applications in use by testers. Studying category trends provides insight into the kind of user Apple is targeting and how it expects the device to be used. They've compiled a chart that shows the number of applications in use by category across test devices.
Flurry has concluded that the device will be used for Play not Work with a strong emphasize on gaming. They believe the tablet clearly targets consumers with a mix of applications mainly for media and entertainment consumption as opposed to enterprise, productivity and computing. The device is thought be directed to users who are out-and-about rather than replace the many devices found in the living room.
The company notes that the Apple hardware they detected was running on OS 3.2, which has not yet been released. From their testing they believe that Apple will leverage the 130,000+ App Store applications on day one for the new device.
