Leaker Jon Prosser revealed some new details about Apple's long rumored AR glasses in a video posted to YouTube this morning.
Prosser says the glasses will be called 'Apple Glass' and start at $499. Users will be able to customize them with a prescription at an additional cost. The AR glasses will purportedly be powered by the iPhone, resulting in the lower than expected cost.
Apple had planned to unveil the glasses as a 'One More Thing' announcement at the end of the iPhone 12 unveiling; however, it's unclear if that will still happen due to the coronavirus outbreak. The company wants media to be present at the event and so it could push the unveiling to March 2021.
The glasses will likely be released somewhere around Q4 2021 - Q1 2022.
Prosser is in possession of a video that shows a prototype device; however, he has yet to share the footage due to legal concerns. The prototype was plastic; however, that material could change. The design is similar to traditional glasses with LiDAR on the right temple and no camera. The glasses charged wirelessly by flipping them upside down on a plastic stand.
Apple Glass will have displays in both lenses and use a UI called 'Starboard'. The UI is controlled via gestures on and in front of the device. Prosser says the glasses will be able to scan proprietary Apple QR codes.
At this point in time there isn't a sunglasses version of Apple Glass as the company is struggling to get the displays to work on tinted glass.
