Investigators with the York Regional Police Auto/Cargo Theft Unit are advising residents they have identified a new method being used by thieves to track and steal high-end vehicles across York Region.
The would be thieves hide an AirTag somewhere on your vehicle then track it for theft at a more convenient time or place. Common hiding spots are behind the gas cap cover or trailer connector cover.
In York Region alone, officers have investigated five incidents since September where suspects have used AirTags to aid in vehicle theft.
Brand name ‘air tags’ are placed in out-of-sight areas of the target vehicles when they are parked in public places like malls or parking lots. Thieves then track the targeted vehicles to the victim’s residence, where they are stolen from the driveway.
Apple notifies iPhone users if they are being followed by another user's AirTag device. If you receive this notification while driving, stop in a safe area and check your vehicle for any tracking devices.
