ASE Looks to Land Backend Orders for Apple Designed 5G Modem

ASE is looking to land backend orders for the first Apple designed 5G modem, according to a new report from DigiTimes. ASE Technology owns Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL).

While Apple is likely to partner with TSMC for chip production of the new modem, the company often looks to add some diversification in its supply chain. ASE and SPIL have both been Qualcomm partners for packaging 5G modem chips including those found in the iPhone.

DigiTimes estimates that Apple will launch its 5G modem in 2023.

Apple is estimated to ship at least 200 million new iPhones in 2023, and will surely rely on multiple partners to handle backend processing of its in-house 5G modem chips and RF transceiver ICs, based on its regular supply chain management policy for its devices, the sources added.

Notably, a recent report said TSMC has landed all orders to supply Apple with 5G RF transceiver chips for the next generation iPhone 14. The company will also produce two A16 Bionic processors for the iPhone 14. Both will have a 6-core processor architecture, but will be differentiated according to the number of graphics cores.
