Netflix has officially announced an end to password sharing in the United States. Subscribers will now have to pay an additional $7.99/month to share their account with another person. This is follows the rollout of a similar ban in other countries.
Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United States. A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday — and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices. We recognize that our members have many entertainment choices. It's why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV shows — so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you're watching with, there's always something satisfying to watch on Netflix.
Here's a look at the email going out to customers today...
----- An update on sharing between households
Hi [Name],
Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with - your household.
You can easily watch Netflix on the go and when you travel - either on your personal devices or a TV at a hotel or vacation home.
To control how your account is used, you can: • Check who's using your Netflix. Review which devices are signed in to your account. Sign out of devices that shouldn't have access and consider changing_your password.
If you want to share Netflix with someone outside of your household, you can use these features: • Transfer a profile. Anyone on your account can transfer a profile to a new membership that they pay for. • Buy an extra member. You can share your Netflix account with someone who doesn't live with you for $7.99/month more.
We know you might have questions. Our Help Center has detailed information for you.
Thank you for choosing Netflix. We appreciate your membership and we look forward to bringing you more great TV shows and movies.

There is a simple answer. Go back to physical content. The local library has books and sometimes movies. There’s sharing for you. They are just a bunch of money grubbing blood suckers. Maybe all these production studios and music publishers and artists should donate to the local library or similar official sharing institution. People should pay for things indirectly and communally, unless they specifically want exclusive access beyond what can be got in a community. Commerce and community within reason. Things should increasingly become community owned. Local resources anyone can access. Maybe people just pay the community keepers. To the extent at least that creators themselves would like to make use of locally accessible content and resources.
Instead of worrying about who shares their account, they should worry about actually keeping good content. All the favorite programs have either been canceled or sold and soon there will be nothing worth watching
