macOS Sonoma 14.4 Bug Appears to Erase Saved File Versions in iCloud Drive

A bug in macOS Sonoma 14.4 is reportedly erasing saved file versions in iCloud Drive for users with Optimize Mac Storage enabled.
The bug was detailed by eclecticlight.co and it may be a serious issue for users who save their documents to iCloud Drive.
In previous versions of macOS, when a file is evicted ('Remove downloads') from local storage in iCloud Drive, all its saved versions have been preserved. Download that file again from iCloud Drive, and versions saved on that Mac (but not other Macs or devices) have remained fully accessible. Do that in 14.4, and all previous versions are now removed, and lost forever.
The site tested the same workflow in macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma 14.3 without any issue. A bug report has been provided to Apple (FB13691058), but it's unclear how quickly the company will be able to address the problem.
For now, users are advised to not put files into iCloud Drive or to turn Optimize Mac Storage off.
