In a new Apple Park interview with Christopher Lawley, Apple product managers discuss Smart Script and Math Notes.
I had the chance to sit down with two product managers at Apple to talk about Smart Script and Math Notes.
Lawley discusses various aspects of the new features with Jenny Chen, Engineering Manager for Input Experiences, and Ty Jordan, Product Manager for System Experiences.
Smart Script is a new feature in the iPadOS 18 Notes app that uses an on-device machine learning model to learn and refine the user's handwriting, making handwritten text as functional as typed text. Smart Script includes features such as spell check, reflowing text, and the ability to paste typed text as handwritten text. This feature learns and improves with use, adapting to the user's handwriting style and refining it for better readability and functionality.
Math Notes is integrated into the iPadOS 18 calculator app. This feature allows users to write math equations naturally with the Apple Pencil and provides instant answers. Math Notes supports setting and updating variables, making it suitable for complex calculations and repeated use cases. Additionally, it includes graphing capabilities, allowing users to create and manipulate graphs easily.
