Apple may be planning to add a new 'SUMMARIZED BY APPLE INTELLIGENCE' label to notification summaries in iOS 18.3.
Earlier today, Apple released iOS 18.3 beta 3 to developers. The update disabled Apple Intelligence notification summaries for various apps, particularly News-based ones. Before the notification summaries became 'Temporarily Unavailable,' we managed to capture screenshots showcasing what appears to be new styling designed to clearly denote these summaries as AI-generated.
In the screenshot below, you can see a typical push notification from the iClarified app (download here). It features regularly stylized text just below the app name.
Next are Apple Intelligence notifications for the eufy and Home apps. Notice the summary icon and newly italicized text, which help distinguish these notifications from regular ones.
Finally, the Apple News summary notification features the same icon and italicized text but also includes a new 'SUMMARIZED BY APPLE INTELLIGENCE' label, making it unmistakably clear that the summary is AI-generated. Additionally, users are asked if they want to "Continue summarizing groups of notifications from News?" and informed that "Summaries may contain errors."
Apple's decision to introduce clearer labels and styling for AI-generated content comes in response to complaints from news organizations about inaccuracies in its notification summaries. In several reported cases, Apple Intelligence generated misleading summaries, including one that falsely claimed a murder suspect had shot himself and another suggesting tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay. These incidents prompted significant backlash from news outlets, raising concerns about the reliability and accuracy of AI-generated content.
