Sonos is Planning to Launch a Video Streaming Device to Rival Apple TV 4K

Sonos is planning to launch a new video streaming device that will rival the Apple TV 4K, according to a new report from The Verge. The device will allegedly cost between $200 and $400, significantly more than some of its competitors.

I've seen images of the upcoming product, which is deep into development, and it's about as nondescript as streaming hardware gets. Viewed from the top, the device is a flattened black square and slightly thicker than a deck of trading cards.

The streaming device, codenamed Pinewood, is powered by Android. Sources say it has a "beautiful" interface, despite being developed in partnership with a digital ads firm. It will combine content from numerous platforms like Netflix, Max, and Disney Plus into a single, unified software experience. Additionally, a universal search feature will allow users to search across their streaming accounts.

The Pinewood device will ship with a physical remote control featuring shortcuts for popular apps and will also integrate voice control.

A unique feature of the device is its ability to serve as an HDMI switch. It purportedly has several HDMI ports with passthrough functionality, allowing users to connect gaming consoles or Blu-ray players. The box can transmit lag-free TV audio to the company's soundbars and speakers. It will also unlock the capability of configuring a surround sound system with the company's speakers, enabling more advanced Dolby Atmos setups. Pinewood includes a gigabit Ethernet port and supports Wi-Fi 7 for a reliable Internet connection.

The launch of the Pinewood streaming device may be a defining moment for the Sonos' future. With the departure of CEO Patrick Spence following months of turmoil, newly appointed interim CEO Tom Conrad has the challenge of not only restoring consumer confidence but also ensuring that Pinewood succeeds in an already crowded market.

Given the disappointing sales of the Sonos Ace headphones and the lingering backlash from the company's disastrous app update, Pinewood must make a compelling case to consumers. Whether this product will mark a turning point for Sonos or simply become another niche experiment remains to be seen.

**Reminder**:
Sonos has launched a big sale on its home audio products ahead of Super Bowl LIX on February 9th.
