Amazon is set to preview a generative AI-powered version of Alexa at an upcoming February 26 press event, according to a new Reuters report. This will be the most significant upgrade to Alexa since its debut over a decade ago.

The new generative AI-powered Alexa represents at once a huge opportunity for Amazon, which counts more than half a billion Alexa-enabled devices in the market, and a tremendous risk. Amazon is hoping the revamp, designed to be able to converse with users, can convert some of its hundreds of millions of users into paying customers in an effort to generate a return for the unprofitable business.

The upgraded Alexa assistant is purported to be able to handle multiple sequential prompts and act as a digital "agent" for users—executing actions without requiring direct, moment-to-moment commands. In a notable enhancement, the new Alexa is designed to remember customer preferences to help make personalized music or restaurant recommendations. It will also allow users to issue multiple prompts in a single session so that, for example, one could later modify a hamburger order before it is sent out for delivery. Additionally, the service will be compatible with existing Alexa devices, ensuring a smooth transition for current users.

Reuters reports that a crucial "Go/No-go" meeting is slated for February 14, during which Amazon executives will decide if Alexa's new generative AI capabilities are ready for the broader market. Internally, the upgraded service has been referred to as "Banyan" and "Remarkable Alexa." However, it is not yet confirmed if either will become the product's official name.

Initial plans indicate that the new Alexa service will be rolled out to a limited user base at no cost. Although Amazon has toyed with the idea of introducing a monthly fee in the $5 to $10 range, the current strategy appears focused on refinement and testing. Meanwhile, Amazon will maintain its current offering, now dubbed "Classic Alexa," though further enhancements for that version have reportedly been paused.

Analysts from Bank of America project that if just 10% of approximately 100 million active devices were to subscribe at $5 per month, the revenue potential could reach an estimated $600 million annually.
