iFixit has published a teardown of Apple's new M4 MacBook Air, which was just released on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The teardown provides an in-depth look at the laptop's internal design, highlighting both hardware upgrades and repairability challenges.
Spring has sprung and new MacBook Airs are popping up on to our teardown table. This year's refresh brings Apple's most capable M4 Silicon to the iconic laptop. That means a couple more cores here or there depending on the configuration you pick, and doubling the base model's Unified Memory from 8GB to 16GB. The camera gets a resolution bump from 1080p to 4K and, rather surprisingly, both the 13 and 15 inch versions get a $100 price cut with the 13-inch coming in at $1000 pre-tax. What will we find inside the new MacBook Air? Let's find out!
Key Highlights
● Battery is removable but still uses stretch release adhesive instead of the newer electrically releasing adhesive found in iPhones.
● USB-C, MagSafe, and audio ports are modular, making them easier to replace.
● Trackpad and speakers can be removed with moderate effort.
● Display replacement is complex, requiring deep disassembly.
● Touch ID button is extremely difficult to access and is integrated into the top case.
Repairability Score - 5/10
● Apple provides repair manuals on day one and offers orderable replacement parts.
● However, parts pairing and calibration issues persist, preventing third-party or salvaged part replacements.
● Soldered storage and deeply embedded keyboard reduce repairability.
