Google is reportedly phasing out the use of Windows in favor of Mac OS X and Linux due to security concerns.
The Financial Times has heard from several Google employees who say the move began in earnest after Google China was hacked.
Were not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort, said one Google employee.
Many people have been moved away from [Windows] PCs, mostly towards Mac OS, following the China hacking attacks, said another.
Apparently new hires are given the choice of Macs or Linux...
Linux is open source and we feel good about it, said one employee. Microsoft we dont feel so good about.
Employees who desperately want Windows need to get clearance from quite senior levels, one employee said. Getting a new Windows machine now requires CIO approval, said another employee.
